about the Chinese marriage documentation. Here are the steps that I recommend:

1. Get 3 notarized copies of your divorce filings. Call the Secretary of State for the state that you divorced in. You may need to contact at least 2 departments. You will probably have to pay them by phone so have your credit or debit card ready. I paid $62.50 for 3 copies. Also, when you call, make sure you have ready your social security number your ex-spouse's name used in the divorce date of the divorce

a. Notarization department: Inform them that they will be receiving 3 copies of your divorce filing from Vital Statistics. Tell them once they notarize them to mail them directly to you. They can probably transfer you to Vital Statistics after your call.

b. Vital Statistics: This is where you will order the divorce filings. Tell them to have the filings sent directly to their Secretary of State Notarization Department.

Make sure you ask them the timeline for this process. It took only 3 days for them to send me mine. If you have more than one divorce, you will have to do this for each divorce for each state.

2. Once you receive the divorce filings in the mail you then need to refer to the notarization and mailing requirements to your regional Chinese Consulate. If you live close to one you might just want to stop by. If not then you will need to find your regional Chinese consulate and go to their web-site. Here is a annoying but inclusive page that should help you narrow down which region you are in http://www.asststork.com/pages/consulate.html.

For a walk-in or mail-in, you really only need to notarize 2 (per divorce) divorce filings of the 3 you received from your Secretary of State. I kept an extra one that I may need for the K3 filing after we are married. If you send by mail, you will need to treat each divorce filing you want notarized as completely separate. No bulk deals here. They want to maximize profit. You will need a money order and application for notarization for each. Don't forget to make photocopies of the divorce filings and include with your application. Not sure about every consulate but I know the one in San Francisco did.

All I can say about this part is that make sure you complete everything they ask for.

3. Once that is done then you need to fill out an Affidavit for Marriagability that you should also find on your Chinese consulate't web-site. Combine that with your completely notarized divorce decree(s) and take that to the marriage office when you get to China.

I have included 2 notarized divorce filings in case there is more than one copy required. If not then use it for your spouce's K3 visa filing. You will likely need the third one notarized at some point as well. I am not sure about this yet since I have not completed the K3 filing part of the process yet. I just figured I would.
